Big-box retailers prioritize price and volume, which often means lumber is exposed to outdoor elements on open lots, handled by forklifts without care for grain orientation, and sold without meaningful quality screening. What you pull off the rack may be wet, bowed, or riddled with loose knots that compromise fastener holding. Dedicated lumber yards often store material under cover, organize it by grade, and sort it more carefully. The result can be straighter cuts, tighter grain, and materials that perform as expected from day one. Ask suppliers how they store and handle their stock.

What to Check When Materials Arrive

Check each delivery for straightness, surface defects, and grade stamps that match what you ordered under the standards of the American Lumber Standard Committee. If moisture matters for your application, a pin meter will tell you whether framing lumber and interior trim or finish-grade stock are dry enough to install, or whether they need time to acclimate first.

If material arrives wet, damaged, or off-grade, raise it with the supplier right away. Ask about return and replacement policies before you order, since they vary from supplier to supplier.
