Lumber Delivery Is Different

If you've never ordered a lumber delivery before, the process can feel unfamiliar. Unlike a box on your doorstep, a lumber delivery involves heavy materials, large trucks, and specific site requirements. Knowing what to expect helps everything go smoothly.

How Ordering Works

Most customers call or visit the yard with their material list. We pull and tally the order, calculate delivery charges, and schedule a delivery window. For standard orders, we can typically deliver within two to three business days. Rush delivery is sometimes available for an additional fee, depending on truck availability.

We deliver on flatbed trucks or stake-body trucks depending on the load size. A typical residential delivery — say, framing lumber for a garage or decking for a porch — fits on a single truck. Larger jobs may require multiple loads.

Preparing Your Delivery Site

This is where many first-time customers get caught off guard. Our trucks need:

  • Clear access: The delivery truck is typically 30 to 35 feet long. If we're delivering to the rear of a property via the alley — which is common in Chicago — the alley must be clear of dumpsters, parked cars, and overhanging branches. If the truck can't get through, the delivery has to be rescheduled.
  • A level drop point: Lumber is heavy. A bundle of 2x4x8 studs weighs around 800 pounds. We need a flat, stable area to place the material — a driveway, concrete pad, or compacted gravel area. Dropping lumber on soft grass creates a muddy mess and makes the lumber hard to access later.
  • Someone on site: We need a person present to confirm the order, direct placement, and sign for the delivery. If no one is home, the driver cannot leave the material unattended for liability reasons.

Alley Deliveries: A Chicago Specialty

Chicago's alley grid is both a blessing and a challenge for lumber delivery. Most residential construction happens in the back yard — garages, decks, porches, fences — and the alley provides direct access. However, alleys are narrow, often have utility poles and wires, and are shared with neighbors, garbage trucks, and parked vehicles.

Let your neighbors know when a delivery is coming, especially if they park in the alley. A five-minute conversation saves everyone frustration. If your alley has low-hanging power lines, measure the clearance and let us know when ordering — our truck bodies vary in height and we need to send the right one.

Boom Truck vs. Flatbed

For loads that need to be placed over a fence or in a specific backyard location, a boom truck (also called a crane truck or knuckle boom) is available. The hydraulic arm can lift bundles over six-foot fences and place them exactly where you need them. Boom truck delivery costs more than a standard flatbed drop but saves hours of hand-carrying lumber through gangways and around obstacles.

Delivery Charges

Delivery fees in the Chicago metro area typically range from $75 to $200 depending on distance, load size, and whether a boom is needed. For large orders, delivery is often included or discounted. We'll quote the delivery charge when you place the order so there are no surprises.

Checking Your Delivery

When the truck arrives, take five minutes to check the load against your order ticket before the driver leaves. Count the bundles, verify species and dimensions, and look for any obvious damage. It's much easier to resolve a discrepancy with the driver on site than after the truck is gone.

Once the lumber is on the ground, store it elevated on stickers (spacer strips) and covered with a tarp if rain is expected. Lumber sitting directly on wet ground will absorb moisture and can start to mildew within days.
